Distrokid Review 2020/ Blunt Talk Episode

If you make music and thought about how you would get your music onto Spotify or iTunes, you almost certainly heard of Distrokid. Distrokid is one of the top digital music distributors that help rappers and musicians to release their music and get paid for streams. So if you are about your business and want to make sure you get the money you deserve, you need one of these digital music distributors to help collect some of your earnings.

Music Digital Distributors

Distributors only help collect some of your earnings, so you’ll need to sign up with a few other services but this is a major component. So as I begin this journey of releasing my music to the world I want to make sure I pick the right distributor to work with. If you google or youtube best digital distributors, oftentimes you’ll be directed to Distrokid. But why Distrokid over TuneCore, CD Baby, and other digital distributors?

Well, word on the street is that you only pay a small annual fee on $19.99 for unlimited music. Yup, $19.99 for 1 year to post as many songs as you want onto iTunes, Tidal, Spotify, TikTok, Amazon.com, and many other platforms. So like I said, for $19.99 a year you can give the world the chance to hear your music just like your favorite rapper Lil Pump, Joyner Lucas, or Drake. And the best part about it is that they claim you get to keep 100% of your earnings!

Distrokid – False Advertising?

Now, you might have noticed that I said they claim you get to keep all of your money. They say specifically on the front page of their website that you get to keep 100% of your earnings. However, while doing my research it seems there is more to the small annual fee and the 100% earnings talk. Now technically speaking, both of these statements are true with the basic plan and no add-ons. However, the somewhat important add-on’s are features that you almost certainly would want for any music you put out. At least if you are serious about your business.

To start is the option of releasing your music on a certain date. To actually do any legit marketing with a release date in mind, you need to pay for their Musician Plus plan. The Plus plan is for 2 bands or artist and costs $39.99 a year. So of the rip, we pay an additional $20 a year. But after the subscription plan fee, we still have to pay for things such as YouTube Money, Shazam & iPhone Siri, or Leave a Legacy. Most features have annual fees but the Leave a Legacy add-on is a one time fee for that one song or album. Below is a graph with pricing information.

Youtube Money allows you to “get notified and paid if your music is ever in any YouTube videos… When your music is detected in any YouTube video, you’ll be notified – and ad revenue will automatically go to you, instead of to the person who uploaded the video”. And Store Maximizer automatically delivers your single to new online stores and streaming services as long as you have an active subscription and pay the extra fee.

View the Graph Below with Some of Distrokids 2020 Features and Rates:

Youtube MoneyYoutube Content ID pays you when others upload and play your music in their videos.$4.95/yr per single or $14.95/yr per albumDistrokid keeps 20% of YouTube ad revenue
Store MaximizerAutomatically get new songs into new online stores and streaming services$7.95/yr per albumDistrokid keeps 0% of revenue
Leave a LegacyGet your music to stay up forever in case of a life-ending emergency *Doesn’t replace annual membership fee$29 per single
$49 per album
Distrokid keeps 0% of royalties
Cover Song LicensingIf you performed and recorded yourself singing someone’s song like Tory Lanez or Michael Jackson$12/ yr per song9.1 cent or 1.75 cents per minute of playing time or fraction thereof, whichever is larger
ISRC CodesUnique code assigned to each song you upload to with tracking your songFREE*Specifiy your own ISRC code if you have the Plus or Label plan

So, Distrokid is a pretty sick deal. Unlimited for uploads and 100% of your streams for only $19.99 a year is pretty sick. But, and there’s almost always a but, if you care about critical features such as Youtube Content ID and their Youtube Money feature, or getting your music into new streaming services than you will be paying more. The question is, will you be making more money in return with 100% of royalties and 80% of Youtube plays than you are paying for the annual subscription and add-on fees?
